Wendigo History

The story of the Wendigo (and to another extent, the Uktena) in Southern California is a tragic one. The Native American tribes the Wendigo were part of were simply not prepared for the sheer number of the European invaders - First the Spanish from the south and then the newly spawned 'Americans' flooding in from the east. Despite the best their warriors could fight, which included a rather successful direct attack on Mission San Diego in the early part of the territory, their land began to shrink more and more and their numbers dwindled. But what added true insult to both the Wendigo and the Uktena were the arrivals of the other Tribes of Garou, coming to claim land and space for themselves, most of the time with no respect to those that were here before them.

This led to fights between wolves, after the Shadow Lords eliminated Taker of Souls in the 1700s - they rightfully felt they had earned the honor of claiming space for themselves, but both the Uktena and the Wendigo did not agree they were entitled to as much as they wished to claim. The Wyrm is anything if not a clever foe and saw how both tribes felt maligned by their cousins, targetting their people and pushing native tribes into more confined reservation spaces, most notably during the formation of the Pala Reservation.

The prevailing opinion among the warriors and judges of the Wendigo was the need to find a new way to fight their enemy, a way to convince the other tribes of the error of their ways before they too became like the Croatan and were relegated to history. But this has not gone well, and for many, many years, the land has been serenaded with more Death Songs than Victory Howls.

Now, our numbers are low, too low, and those that remain have begun to cling to our past, some in the hopes of finding what we have lost from ancient Grandmother's teachings, to learn where we have gone astray, but others in the hope that adhering to the old ways may be the only way to reach across to all garou and finally unite them together. This last effort is led by Ochoca 'Dance Of Leaves' Windbringer, a Wendigo Theurge known for his adherence to the Ghost Dance. He makes no public claim to be the leader of the Tribe in the area, but rest assured that anyone that does, should have him as an advisor before they do.
